UNIQUE NILEKANI UNVEILS HIS UNIQUE ID PLANS

For the next nine months at least, Nandan Nilekani, chairperson of India's unique identification (UID) number authority, will not be leaving Indian shores.

It will be the longest period in his professional life that he has never stepped out of the country.

The former Infosys head is even ready to miss the annual World Economic Forum at Davos in January 2010, which he has been attending for over a decade.

All so as to ensure he keeps the deadline he has set himself and provides the first UID number within the next 18 months.

In an informal interaction with senior editors at Hindustan Times on Tuesday, Nilekani said he hoped to get UIDs issued to around 600 million Indians in the next five years.


 


SPECIAL IDS FOR MCD TAX PAYERS

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Tuesday announced the issuance of special identification number for tax payers. To be prepared on the lines of the Permanent Account Number (PAN), this card will have all details about the taxpayer including how many times the person has availed of amnesty schemes. According to Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain, software is being developed for the same. "This will benefit both the taxpayers and the Corporation.

Taxpayers would not need to carry heavy files to show their past record, the software will retrieve all records when one feeds the allotted identification number," said Sain.


 


GET ONLINE TO KNOW STATUS OF CIVIC WORKS

Have those trenches near your house, where BBMP is constructing a storm water drain, been kept open for long? Does the underpass work look like it's been on for ages? Want to know when these projects will be completed?

Log on to the BBMP's website to know more about every project undertaken by the civic body -- status, money spent, details of the contractor and most importantly, when it will be completed.

The BBMP launched a web-based project monitoring system on Tuesday. The real-time status of every project/work can be seen. Alongside, details of the e-procurement -- e-tendering of works contract -- were also unveiled.

Introducing the new initiatives, BBMP administrator K M Shivakumar said the civic agency has over projects worth Rs 2,000 crore implemented every year. These need strong monitoring to avoid time and cost overrun.

" All corporation offices will have broadband facility to know the real-time status of projects. The project monitoring team has to create schedules, track progress, time and costs, monitor the cash flow. This is a new way of remotely monitoring activities," Shivakumar explained.


 


FORM-38 DOWNLOAD FACILITY NOW AVAILABLE FOR PEOPLE

The facility of downloading form 38, provided by the commercial tax department was inaugurated on Tuesday. The department has already provided facility of online payment, online return and online transit declaration forms. This would reduce the need of dealers to visit the department's office time and again for petty things.

In order to avail the facility dealer would have to login department's website comtax.up.nic.in and register for form 38 download facility. The password will be mailed to the dealer in the mail ID provided by the applicant in the registration form. Dealer may download the form using this password. He/she will have to submit the utilisation with in seven days of the use of the form.


 


NILEKANI TO SEEK DELHI DATABASE

The chairman of the National Unique ID Authority of India and former co-founder of Infosys Nandan Nilekani will hold consultation with the Delhi government on Wednesday where he is likely to seek the database of more than five million people in the city.

Nilekani will meet Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta and is likely to explore ways to make the unique ID comprehensive in nature by seeking Delhi’s experience in making the biometric cards for the people below the poverty line, which number more than two million in the city.

Nilekani, after being appointed the chairman of the NUIA, had sought Delhi’s experience for his work.

He has also been meeting heads of various ministries to get access to their respective data.

Delhi is uniquely positioned for Nilekani, as the capital city already has a huge database of more than five million people, including the BPL card holders, senior citizens.
